The novel focuses on the lives of a cast of central characters: Lee Chong, a grocery store owner; Doc, a marine biologist; Dora Flood, a motherly brothel owner; and a group of flophouse residents led by a bum named Mack. The novel emphasizes the impact each character or organism has on the community as a whole. It draws attention to the significant role played by members of society. Cannery Row was a popular and critical success at the time of its publication and was very impressive in my ways, (Unknown).
The beginning of this article starts out by an introduction of the book The Grapes of Wrath. It explains how and why Steinbeck wrote this book. The book even won a Nobel Prize for literature and for fictional works. Then the next paragraph goes on to explain who Steinbeck is and how he became a major headline for literature. The last part of the article summarizes and explains all of Steinbeck’s major works such as: Of Mice and Men, Grapes of Wrath, In Dubious Battle and many others.
This article catches scores of waterfront processors provided the backdrop for John Steinbeck's classic novel "Cannery Row." But by the late 1940s, the sardines all but disappeared, and sometime after that, the ubiquitous cans of fish vanished from pantries of most American families. Tom Banse reported this. What the reporters thought was strange was that the fish they caught were related to Steinbeck’s work, Cannery Row.
In this article, this was all familiar territory for John Steinbeck, "The Grapes of Wrath," "Cannery Row," and other mid-century classics where place matters. But the latest place for his works is in a courtroom. The reporters made a list of Steinbeck’s top ten works. They had recently been blogging about the best ones they enjoyed reading. Although, this article was very short and didn’t give as much information as the previous one but may help with research on one of Steinbeck’s other works.

John Steinbeck's Cannery Row spotlights the legendary lane during its industrial heyday, but the street's true story begins long before canneries lined the former Ocean View Avenue. From Native American, Asian and European settlement, through the boom and bust of the whaling and sardine industries, to structural and economic despair followed by restoration and re-development, the tale of Cannery Row – so renamed by Monterey officials 13 years after the release of Steinbeck's novel – continues to fascinate guests. Here, past and present alike influence the architecture, cuisine and attractions as Cannery Row continues to celebrate the unshakable spirit on which it was founded.
Around this time, jazz music was very popular. In small towns and restaurants it was the main thing involved in any life hobby. John wasn’t mainly focused on this time period to base his books on. Jazz wasn’t truly involved what so ever in his work. I thought that this time period was different than others because it involved more couples and interactions than just the writing period.

Cannery Row is a fictional type book that kept my attention the whole time. The book was set in the cannery district of Monterey, California around the 20th century. Not much was happening around this time but historical events were occurring. In my opinion this book was disturbing at certain point, which I could tell was the climax of the book. Doc had found a dead body on the beach just on a normal day and even witnessed a suicide. The main point of Mac and the boys was they were trying to throw a party for Doc to appreciate him in many ways. The party did not go over too well. In the end, they tried to throw another party for Doc and it all ended well, with him being happy.
I would recommend this book to readers that love fictional events and suspense. It wasn’t my favorite book I have read so far but I would recommend it to most people. The reason I didn’t like it is the events at times weren’t relevant to the plot. Doc witnessed a dead body had nothing to do with Mack losing his job and having to find a way to make his way. This may have been one of the most enduring book I have read but I am glad I did.

John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in the Salinas Valley of California. He was the third of the children and the only boy. His parents both believed in exposing their children to culture. After John’s high school career he attended many jobs including a laborer in a sugar factory, in the mills, and even as a rancher. What inspired him to become a writer are his very unique talents in writing when he was a kid. Barnes stated, “John Steinbeck was a versatile writer” (Barnes). He wrote his first professionally published article in 1927, The Smoker’s Companion. It is said that he used the pseudonym of John Stern because he did not want to be associated with a magazine by that name (McCarthy 11). John died in 1968 and will be remembered as a successful novelist and will hold a special place in history of writing.

Mack is what you would call a rebel that likes to get into trouble, a lot. As for the boys of the group, they are just as bad as Mack. They follow what he does in certain situations, such as stealing bottles of alcohol from his work and bringing it home to the boys. Hazel is the one out of the group that actually works hard, surprisingly. Apart from the boys, Doc is proprietor of Western Biological Laboratory. Doc is the guy that everyone wants to make happy because he feels lonely most of the time. The boys are always looking for ways to impress him.

Book Report: Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck is filled with many fictional events. It has 196, paperback, pages that would catch anyone’s eye. The publisher of this book is The Viking Press based out of New York; published in 1945. Even a film version was released in 1982 to represent this book as something even bigger. The reason I chose this book is the fact that John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men, I really enjoyed that book. Knowing that he has written such inspiring books just made me want to read another. It may not have been the number one book I would have chosen but now that I did, I’m glad. Fictional stories always capture my attention because its contents are far beyond the ordinary and that what I look for. This book was not on the best seller list compared to his other works but there are many copies of this book sue to its publicity. I thoroughly enjoyed this work from Steinbeck.
The main characters of this book are: Mack and the boys and Doc. Mack and the boys are a group of scheming men who live in a fish shack. Mack is the main leader of the group and the entire boys look up to him. Mack is what you would call a rebel that likes to get into trouble, a lot. As for the boys of the group, they are just as bad as Mack. They follow whatever he does in certain situations, such as stealing bottles of alcohol from his work and bringing it home to the boys. Hazel is the one out of the group that actually works hard, surprisingly. Apart from the boys, Doc is proprietor of Western Biological Laboratory. Doc is the guy that everyone wants to make happy because he feels lonely most of the time. The boys are always looking for ways to impress him.
The other characters that hold a special part in the book are: Dora Flood, Lee Chong, Frankie, and Henri. Dora is the proprietor of the Bear Flag Restaurant. She is large with bright orange hair and seems to have a wide variety of clothing styles. She keeps a close eye on her girls but is a very kind, generous woman. Lee Chong is the Chinese grocer of the Row. He holds just about anything at his store. He is very thoughtful and helpful towards the community. Doc is very thankful at times to have Chong help him out with parties and such. Frankie is mentally handicapped and neglected from his mother. Doc was so kind, he took him into his hands. Frankie can’t do anything right most of the time. He had broken into a jewelry store to buy Doc a present and was eventually institutionalized for this. He loves Doc more than anything. Henri is the local artist of Doc’s. He pretends he is French due to the love of art. People know he isn’t but that never stops him. He started building a boat but never finished it; it just stayed at the dock, vacant.
Cannery Row is a fictional type book that kept my attention the whole time. The book was set in the cannery district of Monterey, California around the 20th century. Not much was happening around this time but historical events were occurring. In my opinion this book was disturbing at certain point which I could tell was the climax of the book. In the end, they tried to throw another party for Doc and it all ended well, with him being happy.
My final thoughts on Cannery Row were is was one of those page turning books but I never could get the true moral purpose of the plot. I really liked all of the strange events that had happened to Doc because that really kept me wanting to read. I disliked the ending because the book started out interesting but the ending wasn’t what I thought it would be. I learned from this book that you have to appreciate the little things people do for you; later on you might regret not making it the best you could have.
